Fish & Tips

     IMG_3757

In Katherine, a $50 fishing kit was picked up from Woolworths, yes, you saw Woolworths (they’re a big supermarket chain over here!) so after some recommendations found Policeman’s Point, between Timber Creek and the WA border, apparently a good place to fish.

It was a stunning location on the river with high banks, flowing water and a real sense of being outdoors being isolated from the main road and built up areas.

Now, consider this. I’ve never fished before and had anticipated when buying a ‘Complete Guide to Fishing’ that a) it would contain all the stuff you need, and b) try and explain some of the bits and pieces to allow you to use all the bits. I was wrong!

It’ll come therefore as no surprise to hear that the first fishing expedition wasn’t terribly successful. In fact, it was a disaster. I fell down the muddy clay steep bank twice trying to fetch bits that hadn’t quite made it to the water, almost losing a flipflop in the process, lost at first hook and lure and then eventually a sinker. Bloody things.

So, the tips are:

- don’t get a complete guide and rely on it soley – get a book or go with someone who knows what is happening
- don’t go fishing on a potential croc-infested site – it scares the bejesus out of you!
- learn a few things like knots
- understand what everything does; sinkers, lures, hooks etc
- take a small chair
- make sure you have other food sources for lunch
- make sure you take a sense of humour (i forgot mine for a while and was getting incredibly annoyed!!!)

Happy fishing…
