The timing worked out well with the annual Beer Can Regatta - originally set up as an attempt to reduce the amount of beer cans left from the contractors in the city after the war rebuilding.
A clever businessman came up with the regatta which now has a strong charity focus. Teams enter boats into various classes for $50 on the day with the only requirements being the boat is predominantly made up of beer cans. Some of the entries were just incredible taking upwards of 1,000 manhours to build.
